FATAL BUILDING ACCIDENT IN DUNDEE.

Collapse of a Tenement.

A serious building accident occurred at Dundee yesterday, whereby one man lost his life, another
was seriously injured, while other workmen had narrow escapes. The accident occurred in Scott
Street, on the north side of which two four-storey tenements are in course of erection. The
tenements are self-contained, and separated by a gable wall. The building proper is, or rather was, nearing completion, the walls and gables having been constructed to their full height. Work was begun at seven o’clock in the morning. Five workmen were engaged pointing the building from scaffolding erected inside. About 7.30 the foreman had occasion to converse with one of the workmen, and on looking up he observed that the chimney on the inside gable was about to fall.

His cry of warning came too late, and with a tremendous crash chimney and gable fell, dragging
with them part of the front wall. William Lyon (20), apprentice mason, at this moment was
employed cementing the chimney, and was carried away by the wreckage. Henry Kemp, mason,
who was working near by, also fell the entire height of the building. The utmost consternation
prevailed among the workmen, and it was some moments before anything could be done to extricate the unfortunate men. Lyon lay crushed and bleeding, his head beneath a large stone, and at first sight Kemp’s injuries appeared to be little less serious. Dr Roy, Fleuchar Street, was summoned. In the case of Lyon nothing could be done, Dr Roy expressing the opinion that death must have been instantaneous, the skull being terribly fractured. Every attention was paid to Kemp, who gradually regained consciousness. He complained of great pain, and, as it was apparent that he had sustained serious injuries, he was removed to the Infirmary. The other men working on the building ran very narrow escapes. Robert Sievwright, apprentice mason, Campbell Street, Lochee, fell from the top of the building. Alighting on the debris, he rebounded through a window on the ground floor, and alighting on his feet, scampered out of the enclosure and along Scott Street, notwithstanding that he had sustained a number of bruises and a severe shaking. He was ultimately assisted to his home.

James Jackson (50), mason, Baxter Street, was knocked from his perch on the scaffolding. In
descending he had the presence of mind to clutch and retain hold of one of the joists, which,
fortunately for him, remained in its place. In this perilous position he remained till assisted by his
companions, Jackson’s son William had an equally narrow escape. Working near Lyon, he
observed the chimney totter before falling, and he had just time to leap clear before the smash
occurred. The damage to the building is considerable. In the gable there is a large gap equal in
depth to the height of the top storey and the base of the chimney, and measuring about 30 feet
across. The part of the front wall between the windows of the top storey, measuring about 10 feet, has also been dragged inwards. Inside the building stones, joists, and scaffolding lie in a confused mass. Opinions differ as to the cause of the accident, some holding that it is due to the recent heavy rains preventing the mortar from "setting", and others attributing it to the presence of "lime shells" among the mortar. Subsequently Mr Mackieson, Burgh Engineer, inspected the building. The occurrence will in due course be reported to the Fiscal, and inquiries will be made.

Needless to say, the accident caused a sensation in the neighbourhood, and a huge crowd collected at the spot. Lyon was about 21 years of age, and lived in Flights Lane, Lochee. Kemp, who is aged about 45, and resides in Kerr’s Lane, Lochee, lies in the infirmary in a critical condition, his collarbone being fractured and his spine injured.

In connection with Lyon’s death, it may be stated that the unfortunate young man’s father was
drowned in August 1876 by falling overboard from the vessel Windburn when lying in the Tay.
Curiously enough Lyon, whose full name is William Kemp Lyon, is a relative of Kemp, who has
sustained serious injuries by the fall of the gable.
