James, Sarah and all 12 children enigrated to Kansas in 1874, landing at Boston. James was burned to death in a barn fire in Turkey Creek in 1879. Both James and Sarah are buried in Scotch Valley Cemetery and there is a headstone.

From Seneca paper, March 21, 1879: 'During a wind last Thursday, a prairie fire got into the barn of James McBride on Turkey Creek and in attempting to rescue a horse from a stable, Mr McBride was badly burned that he died on Sunday.'
